it began then. they didn't tell us that until a year later, and now they're telling us the recession ended in june of 2009. so more than a year ago. you have to say, why does it take so long? they take a while to come out with the numbers so they can pore through all of the economic data. this is being called the great recession. that is, tony, because officially now it lasted 18 months, the longest recession weaves a seen in this country since world war ii and the great depression. many people say it feels like we had a downturn. in june, 2009, when apparent the recession officially ended, our unemployment rate was 9.5%. now it is 9.6%. not only did the situation not get better from an unemployment standpoint. it got worse, that maybe more people coming into the workforce looking for jobs but overall the job picture hasn't improved. the housing picture hasn't improved or the consumer spending. so in june 2009, it ended. >> bottom line, this is all about a bunch of economists with this nonprofit technically scoring this period in time here. >> right. >> this is not about or even taking int

with us on this friday morning. we begin, now, with the first woman executed here in the u.s. in five years. she's been put to death in virginia. >> theresa lewis' case gained international attention, not just because of her gender. but supporters argue that she was not smart enough to carry out the crimes. here's brad wheelis. >> reporter: theresa lewis became the first woman executed in virginia in almost 50 years. lewis was sentenced to detd in 2003, for hiring two killers who shot her husband and her stepson. according to prosecutors, the two were lured into lewis' scheme by sex and money. the money was to promise to split the son's and husband's life insurance with him. lewis confessed to the plot. >> i just wish i could take it back. >> reporter: according to a witness of the execution, these were her last words. >> she said, i want kathy to know that i love you. and i'm very sorry. >> reporter: the two men she conspired with to commit the killings were sentenced to life imprisonment. one killed himself in prison in 2006. lewis' case drew a lot of attention because she was not t
